AI is not sending you clicks — but it is reading you

Every AI chatbot combined still sends under 1% of web traffic. Reading that as "not worth it" gets the story exactly backwards.

The click side really is small

Cloudflare Radar's July 2026 measurement puts Google at 88.08% of search referrals. Every AI bot combined sits under 1%. SE Ranking measures AI platforms at 0.32% of all web traffic.

The crawl side is enormous

The same data holds a sharper ratio: pages crawled per human visit referred back. Anthropic sat at 1,917:1 in July 2026, down from 38,744:1 a year earlier. OpenAI is around 857:1. Google is 5:1.

The loss is not the click. It is not being named inside the answer.

The numbers disagree, and that is normal

Studies put ChatGPT's share of AI referrals at 62.6%, 79.8%, 87.4% and 92.4% — for the same month. Different panels, different measurement layers, different verticals. Read the direction, not the decimal: AI-driven traffic grew 16x from 2024 to 2026.

What it means for you

Work on AI visibility is not for today's clicks. It is so the machine can read your page and understand it correctly. In practice: structured data, plain answers to price and scope questions, and content that is not hidden behind JavaScript — most AI crawlers do not run it.
